Explain Text

The Explain Text feature allows you to produce explanations of input text tailored to your target languages, audience, and context. This is particularly useful for clarifying complex phrases or sentences in different languages or for specific audiences.

How to Use the Explain Text Feature

To use this feature:

  • Switch the "Translate" button to "Explain" using the dropdown menu next to the button.
  • Enter the text you want to explain in the source input area.
  • Click the "Explain" button. The explanation will appear in the target area in as many languages as you’ve selected for the target languages.

Language Selection

The Explain Text feature works seamlessly across multiple languages. Here are some scenarios:

  • To produce explanations in the same language as the input text, ensure the target language matches the source language. For example, input French text and select French as the target language for explanations in French.
  • If no source or target languages are specified, the text will be explained in the same language by default, based on the context. Note: For short texts or texts with ambiguous meaning, this may lead to inaccuracies. For example, a Russian text may be mistakenly explained in another Cyrillic language if they share common words.
  • For multilingual explanations, select multiple target languages. The explanation will be generated for each language.

Working with Contexts

The Explain Text feature works best when combined with Contexts. Contexts allow you to tailor the explanation to a specific tone, audience, or professional setting. Here’s how:

  • Click on "Manage Contexts" to create or edit contexts. For example:
    • Select the "Target Audience" category and choose "0-12 years old" to simplify the explanation for a young audience.
  • After creating the desired context, click "+Context" in the output area and apply the context.
  • Click the "Explain" button again, and the explanation will now be tailored to the selected context. For example, explaining a word or phrase to a child will produce age-appropriate language and tone.

Best Practices

  • Always specify the source and target languages for improved accuracy, especially when working with short or ambiguous texts.
  • Use contexts to refine the explanation. Combine tone, professional contexts, or audience types for customized results.
  • Experiment with multilingual explanations by selecting multiple target languages.
